World: Barley crop forecast of 138 mln tons for this year may turn out to be too optimistic – Newsletter No. 24a (2013-06-14)

Both the USDA and IGC estimate the world barley crop at 138 mln tons this year, up from 130 mln in 2012. However, some analysts believe this estimate may turn out too optimistic, as adverse weather conditions prevail in barley production regions of North America, West and East Europe.

In recent months neither Argentina, Canada, the USA, Russia, Ukraine were active in markets for old crop barley, while the EU continued to sell small quantities. However, demand for old crop barley was very small. Buying interest shifted to new crop positions.

Reported business for feed barley is as follows: Tunisia bought 25,000 tons for June/July deliveries at US$ 280,- CIF, Jordan 150,000 tons July at 279,- and 286,50, Israel 3,000 tons at 268,-. Rumours are that Saudi Arabia booked undisclosed quantities at US$ 280,- CIF.
