Chinese brewers took an interest in Omsk barley (2013-12-06)

Being on an official visit to China a delegation from Omsk led by the governor Victor Nazarov is planning to discuss the questions connected with participation of natives of Omsk in Beijing Program. This program provides for growing of malting barley for Chinese brewing companies in the territory of Russia.

As confirmed by the Regional Ministry of Agriculture and Food this discussion was scheduled ahead. It stands to reason that a Deputy Minister Pavel Pavlov supervising different pilot and innovative projects in agriculture joined the delegation. Beijing Program, started in the territory of the region is an intergovernmental project of the RF and PRC.

This program provides for Russian production of malting barley for further export to PRC and SCO countries. According to the program Russian scientists will carry out scientific tests of malting barley varieties of native and foreign selection in order to define the best of them and to develop agro-technologies for their cultivation. Then these varieties are planning to be launched to production in the Russian farm business. At the present time variety tests have already been started in a number of Siberian regions including the Omsk Region. The director of Siberian Research Institute of Agriculture, an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ivan Chramtsov told the News Agency “Your Omsk” that during the trials Omsk breeders compared offered varieties and local ones for productivity and grain quality. Ivan Chramtsov believes that local varieties stand a good chance for export to China. They are eagerly bought by Russian brewing companies. This year Omsk beer producer “Sun InBev”, making high quality requirements on raw materials, completely covered his needs with local barley. By the opinion of the scientist, the participation in Beijing Program will give the natives of Omsk fresh impetus for scientifically-based malting barley cultivation followed by higher quality.
